944Cup – Round I
Road Atlanta – March 15-16, 2008 The ‘Pot o Gold Rush’ at Road Atlanta finally brought out a rainbow, but not until Mother Nature tried everything else! The 944Cup’s first round of racing started out wet and raining, but the track was drying out when 17 Cup and SuperCup cars went out to qualify, with Canadian Rodrigo Herrara earning the pole for 944Cup, and Alabama native R.L. Mitchell for SuperCup. But the rain returned, and the track had to suspended operations when tornadoes were reported in the immediate area. Although the winds never arrived, a hail storm sent chunks of ice the size of marbles cracking off the cars and pavement in the paddock. The weather wouldn’t stand still for more than 15 minutes, and with the skies clearing up the racers were called to grid. Under late afternoon blinding sunlight on a wet track, everyone made it through the standing water and spray in turn one, but defending Champion Scott Campbell spun in turn four. The car failed to fire, leaving him stranded in the middle of the track. On the next lap Canadian John Bilikas hit the wall at the end of the front straight, bringing out the second waiving yellow. Pole sitter Herrara held on to the win a very shortened race with Evan Brumm in second, and another Canadian, Simon Robin in third. But the bold move of day occurred on the last lap as Bill Howlett drove thru standing water on the outside of turn 12 to edge past Christian Tetzlaff for 6th place at the checkered flag! Sunday’s weather was the calm ‘after’ the storm, but a bright sun behind the flag stand in the early qualifying sessions caused top qualifier Tim Pruitt to miss a flag, and he had to start at the rear of the field. Robin started on the pole, but was out of the race on lap 12 when he ended up in the tire wall at turn 3. Second place qualifier Brumm only made it to lap 2 before his car shut down with electrical problems at the bottom of the ‘esses’. This opened the door for the home town favorites to come back to the front of the field with Brian Landfried winning in 944Cup, Bilikas second, and Campbell third. In SuperCup R.L. Mitchell won both days.
